Cholesterol…it’s a real problem and a LOT of people are struggling to control it.  Pretty much everyone agrees that a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise and a low fat and high fiber diet will help keep bad LDL and Triglyceride levels in check.  For some folks though, this is not enough and their doctors routinely prescribe drugs from the statin family.

It may be that Yerba Mate can help keep LDL and Triglyceride levels in check.  A recent human study from the University of Illinois suggests that regularly drinking 1/2 liter of yerba mate reduced LDL cholesterol and raised HDL cholesterol levels.  Additionally, a lab animal study in Brazil showed a “significant” positive benefit in blood serum levels of cholesterol when using instant yerba mate mixed with water.

Yerba Mate may not solve every cholesterol issue, but it may be a valid part of your healthy lifestyle.  As always, check with your doctor to see if yerba mate might fit in with your personalized health goals.  In the meantime, enjoy yerba mate!
